For those that have been following along, last week Sean over on the Blogpolis Blueprint tagged me with a meme. For those that are new here or just don’t know what a meme is, or how to pronounce it, then you may want to check out Monday’s post for the definition and background.
In a nutshell though Sean has asked 7 of us to give 7 facts about ourselves and in the spirit of memes to ask 7 others to do the same. (The exact rules are given at the end).
Anyway without further ado…
The Answers
- I have first degree black belt in Aikido. For me Aikido is not just a Martial Art (or a Marital one Mel
) it’s a way of life and something which I’m going to blog about (woot for shameless plugs!) - I’m disabled. I’ve been told that it makes me more human when I mention that. To be honest I’d rather do away with it and be…alien? I understand that this can be an awkward point to address but honestly it doesn’t bother me at all to discuss it so fire away with your questions. I’ll answer the first and tell you it’s Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome.
- My favourite superhero of all time is Wolverine and I cannot wait to see the movie. Having said that…
- When I was growing up my real heroes were MacGyver and Dr. Sam Beckett.
- I am a geek. I used to write programs on the BBC Micro when I was about 12 years old. I got into web development via JavaScript and PHP coding. I like Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, basically anything with Star in the title or stars in the background. See also numbers 3 and 4.
- I’m spiritual but not religious. It’s not that I don’t believe in God I just don’t believe in all the guilt associated with religion and not following everything to-the-letter. Yes I stupidly feel guilty for admitting it.
- This is my second attempt at freelancing/self-employment. The first was over 3 years ago and it was in the field of web design. It failed miserably.
The Victims Tagees
- Eric of Motivate Thyself, Frugal Site Design and co-blogger on the Blogopolis Blueprint. Eric is a talented guy and a shrewd businessman. He can design your blog, help you maintain it and he can even tell you how to motivate yourself.
- Janice. As you have a great new blog please share with us some facts about your rich and spiritual life.
- Lisa, you have a great photographic eye. I would love to see you answer this question with your photos.
- A good friend has recently returned to blogging after taking a small break. Dave, let’s see what you have to say (as if you need any more reasons to be selfish anyway
). - Mel. Well it was going to be Mel but she cheated and got herself tagged months ago and has already provided 7 facts about herself. I’m just too lazy to tag anyone else and her list is well worth a read anyway. Such an innocent looking picture as well…
- Blogger Dad. He’s a huge BSG fan and he draws comics. See points 3 and 5 of my answers. Need I say more?…Fair enough Dave, no need to shout. I’ll tell them you’re also a very funny guy…he’s just no longer cool, unlike me.
- Melissa. She has an amazing grasp of the English language and is very gifted in the ability to teach grammar which lets face it, is not only an extremely boring topic it is also very technical. I mean what in the name of all that is good and holy is a past particle/past participate. I can’t tell you without curing your insomnia but Melissa can. As if that’s not impressive enough she also helps you with all sorts of writing including poetry and fiction. She also gives great tips for proofreading.

- Link to your original tagger and list these rules in your post.

Expect panicky letters soon saying “I don’t know what to do, Marc!!!” Thank you – I think? – for tagging me!
I’m glad you’ve shared so much about yourself; I loved this post! You’re a naturally witty guy and I could just tell you were having fun with this! I loved that you shared about your condition. For me, it makes you an inspiration as well as a new cyber pal I like chatting with. It puts a lot of my petty woes into perspective. When you say you’ve had a hard week, chances are you don’t just mean you’ve been having problems with your RSS feed; yet you never complain and are always there to support the rest of us. It doesn’t define you, but the way you deal with it does.
Enough of the soppy stuff. Wolverine IS the guy. But I suspect my reasons for liking him are different from yours…right , girls?! When I answer my taggy thing, I’ll tell you about my own mutant talent…

Mmmmmmmmmmmm….. Wolverine…….. Yes Janice, totally correct! (P.S. Glad you got Comment Luv working!)
As a second question Marc, how do you manage martial arts (yes, I misspelled that and had to correct it!) with MG? I thought the muscular weakness would make it impossible to do.
And yes, I am totally innocent, just like the picture. *coughs* Remind me to tell you my background one day when you’ve got a few hours and need some humour!
Off to check out the other sites! Thanks Marc!

I did not know there was a new X-Men movie coming out. I am f**ing thrilled!! Wolverine – WOOT!
(Okay, James, stop being six years old…)

I don’t feel so bad now – I didn’t know about the new movie either. I just assumed I hadn’t heard about it while I was under my rock! Wouldn’t be the first time!
James, feel free to be six years old. It keeps you young!

Marc, WOW, that is so inspiring. You got a black belt in Aikido while dealing with the CMS? That sounds like a simply INCREDIBLE story. As you know I’m sort of new to your blog, so I’m wondering if you’ve already shared it? If not, please do!

I love these tags because I’m interested in getting to know the bloggers I like, especially when their blog is centered around a topic rather than a journal of sorts. It’s fun to learn about people! I actually already did a meme just like this a couple of months ago – it was six things rather than seven – and you can find it here: http://www.writingforward.com/news/personal-stories/six-different-truths. Thanks for tagging me; hopefully this post I already did will count

Hmm how did this post about *me* turn into a discussion of Wolverine?
@Janice – One of the comments my teachers would say is “Marc always smiles and is always polite – he always says good thanks”. For the most part it was the truth, but not always. I have a tendency to “bottle” things up, not sure if it was to protect myself or others. Probably both.
@Mel (and Janice) Are you actually thinking of Wolverine from the comic books or Hugh Jackman
In Aikido strength can actually hold you back, which is why women and children seem to excel at it, at least until the guys have learned not to rely on their strength. It’s all about turning the attacker’s force back onto him, upsetting his balance and neutralizing the attack.
Women seem to grasp this concept intuitively, men just want to clash with each other
Of course there are things I can’t do such as moving as quickly, but I had a great teacher who understood the principles of Aikido techniques to such a degree that he would sit with me and work with my disability rather than saying “don’t worry about it”.
@James You should be ashamed. Wolverine is your National hero (or he should be). How can you *not* know about the movie!
Still, your comment reminded me of how I reacted when I heard about the new film
@Hayden Thanks for commenting Hayden. No I haven’t actually told the story anywhere. I don’t know if I’m going to write about it here or on my new blog but I’ll keep you informed.
@Melissa Ah another cheat! What do you think boys and girls? Make her write another 7 things?
Nah we’ll let you off the hook. Thanks for sharing Melissa
My aim is to get together with the other gals over here to encourage you to keep opening up. You’ll never be a gusher, but selective sharing combined with your kindness and wit is a great way for us to get to know you.
And, Marc, come on, do you really even need to ask the Hugh Jackman question?!!! (Weirdly, I only like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine…)
Tell us about the new blog soon, you little Welsh tease!
Janice’s last blog post..A Faithful Hand
@Janice So in reality it has nothing to do with Wolverine but everything to do with the Australian portraying him
Nawww…..You missed the point – I ONLY like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine! Wolverine’s essence is what makes HJ hunky! (And you can just tell HJ loved playing Wolvie!)
If you get a Wolvie gravatar for your new blog you’ll treble your femail!

True. Hugh (we’re on a first name basis) has often said he enjoyed returning to the darker side of Wolverine for this new film. He felt the last X-Men film had mellowed the character a bit too much.
I tend to agree with him.
Wolverine is in a comic book? Wow, who knew? LOL!
I like Hugh as Wolverine more than most of his other characters he’s played.
I wonder if there’s some way we could all get together virtually and watch Wolverine together, byo popcorn and beverage of choice, IM in a group through the movie. Wouldn’t that be a cool way to watch it! Although it will be released here in Aust six months after the US, as usual I’m sure!
Melinda’s last blog post..Free Blogathon April 2009 – Come Join Us!
Great idea, Melinda, but we’ll probably get it in the UK after you do! We could have a post DVD watch blog drool afterwards though!
Actually Janice I believe the US and UK are getting simultaneous release dates.
@Mel can you imagine the legalities of setting up a webinar in the middle of a cinema! Would be awesome though.
Maybe one day the studios will figure out how to broadcast it over the Internet so we really can all “go to the movies” together.
Hello Marc!
First of all, who’s Hugh Jackman?
Thanks for opening up about your condition. I followed the link you provided, and it seems there are many variations. How does it affect you on a daily basis? I just hope it doesn’t ever get in the way of your writing, because I truly enjoy your site and your comments on other sites. Your sense of humor and insightful questions about life keep me poking my nose into what you have to say.
I had fun going to the sites you tagged. Lots of fun people out there!
Randi’s last blog post..The Best Kind of Busy
Hi Randi,
Thank you for your kind words
My MG affects me every day in every kind of way. It’s a bit difficult for me to explain as I don’t know what it’s like *not* to suffer from it. Some have likened it to fatigue as in lethargy, 24/7; not sure if that helps to imagine it
Basically I live in a constant weakened state. The level of weakness varies from day to day, not by much, apart from the occasional bad one. I rely on a wheelchair to get about and I have to take medication every 3 hours 5 times a day to counteract the weakness.
On bad days I do have to all but stop and not do any physical activities even writing. So it can and does effect it. Since becoming “unemployed” this week though I’m finding my energy levels starting to pick up a bit as I’m no longer being taxed by having to travel to and from work etc.
Wow, Marc. I am truly impressed with the writing you ARE able to do, in spite of what you have to go through on a daily basis. I appreciate your taking the time to explain it to me. It just proves the assumption that true writers HAVE TO write, and nothing can keep them from it. Good luck with your new “unemployed” state, and please keep writing!
