I‘ve often been told that I am courageous. For living and facing life with a disability etcetera. I’ve always disagreed. Courage is, to me, the same as it is to Eddie Rickenbaker:
Courage is doing what you’re afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you’re scared.
I’m certainly not scared of life. Nor of living it, disability or otherwise.
What does courage mean to you? Do you have any stories you’d like to share? Some quotes of your own? While you ponder it, I’ll leave you with a further nine quotes I’ve found along the way.
Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
~ Anais Nin
Courage is the ladder on which all the other virtues mount.
~ Clare Booth Luce
A timid person is frightened before a danger, a coward during the time, and a courageous person afterward.
~ Jean Paul Richter
Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.
~ John Quincy Adams
Courage is being scared to death – but saddling up anyway.
~ John Wayne
Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.
~ Robert Louis Stevenson
Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace.
~ Amelia Earhart
And my personal favourites:
It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.
Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear.
~ Mark Twain

I love all of them! One for the collection, from the Spanish:
I’ve always been ridiculously brave – it takes my husband’s breath away some of the rashly stupid brave things I’ve done before thinking – but by far the bravest thing I’ve ever done, many years ago, was to decide to get up, the first ever time I decided life wasn’t worth living any more.
Being told I had a tumour just made me philosophical and grateful whereas motherhood has made me as fiecely brave as any mother tiger. It’s primaeval.
Some days, the bravest thing I do is have the courage to simply be myself and keep reaching out, despite the pain of being rejected and abandoned by people who don’t understand that I’m trying to do the very best I can with what I have.

No Hayden, your list of quotes surpass the need for a theme
Janice, you are a model of courage. The more I get to know you, the braver you seem to be.
One of the reasons I’m brave is because my friends are – there’s power in connecting with strong people!
Here’s one for you; my editor over at the new gig used it in her email today. She and I love the same quotes!
“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”
- Audre Lorde
I hope you’ll let me help you hone your vision some day, Marc!

Ooooh, these are *great* – and much needed right now, thank you. Being scared of practically everything (other than Star Trek Next Gen and tea – but actually a bad cuppa is pretty damn scary) I need all the help I can get!
