In this series of posts I’m going to go back to basics in an attempt to teach good Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) from the ground up. Focus is given to blogs but the techniques are applicable to all web pages.
Why SEO is Important
It almost goes without saying but there’s an exponential reason why you want your site to rank number 1 in the search engines. For a search engine results page (SERP) that receives 4,926,623 clicks, the site at number 1 gets 42.13% of those clicks while the site at number 2 gets only 11.9%. Put another way, the site at number one gets 3.5x more clicks than the site ranking immediately below it. (Click Rate for Top 10 Search Results)
Chances are your competition is using SEO to outrank you. Without applying the same techniques yourself not only will you be unable to beat them but you will also struggle to get that number one spot.
That’s not to say SEO is a guaranteed way to get to the top. Far from it. Search Engine Optimisation is easy to implement but its an involved process requiring a substantial amount of time. The good news is that it’s still something which is vastly overlooked by the majority of website owners and even the smallest piece of the SEO puzzle can translate into a large benefit.

Yay for my favourite welsh hero – Marc! After our conversation the other day, I’m really looking forward to this series!

Wow! This is just the kind of bite sized, digestible thing I need. I’ve read ebooks and posts, but I’ve missed being able to ask someone for help if I don’t get something.

@Mel Thanks for the vote of confidence
@Janice There’ll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions as the series progresses. I may even use the questions to produce a follow up post. Hmm that’s given me an idea…
I’m looking forward to this series. I know a little about SEO, but the vast majority is a mystery. I’ll keep my RSS reader in our direction.

Marc,
Looking forward to it. I read the techy stuff and my head swims, so I am always up for someone to put it into English first. I’m glad Melinda mentioned this series!

Kelly

Thanks Lisa and Kelly.
Part the second is going up tomorrow. Unfortunately it’s a rather dry topic with its fair share of jargon, but I’ve tried to keep it to a minimum.
Not much I can do about the dullness though, maybe I should follow Mel’s example and sex it up
Go for it Marc! And you too can be ranked for the word ’sex’ in google! LOL! Not that I’m sure that’s an entirely good thing….
