Creative Writing

It’s something I haven’t done for a while not since my forum based roleplay as a Star Trek Captain almost 5 months ago. Creative writing however is another tool for the writer’s tool chest and another way of making money.

Writing can be informative, it can be practical and educational but the true power of writing comes in its ability to whisk us off to new worlds and exciting adventures. It can take us to places we can only dream of even to places that don’t even exist.

Creative writing can immerse us in the lives of other characters and can makes us reflect on what’s happening in our own. Even if you have no intention of writing fiction for financial gain you should do it for the freedom that comes from expressing your imagination.

Do it publicly or privately whatever suits you best. Everyone loves a story, fiction or non-fiction, start writing yours now.

Melissa of the award winning WritingForward.com blog has an entire category dedicated to creative writing.

My Creative Writing Piece

Apart from wanting to introduce you to the art of creative writing, Dave and Sean over on Collective Inkwell have a creative fiction contest going on and I’ve decided to enter.

One of the contest rules is that entrants are required to post the first part of their story on their blogs with a link back to Collective Inkwell.

So without further ado here’s the opening to my story:

Well, this is odd, he thought to himself. I feel so hungry, really hungry. Must be why I’m feeling so weak. But I had a full lunch, didn’t I?

Why can’t I remember? And where am I? So difficult to see. Come on Miles, think! Where were you last? What were you doing? Ow, my stomach. I wish this damned hunger would go away!

Wait! A hospital. I was in a hospital! Wait…why was I in a hospital? Goddamnit why can’t I remember anything! Think Miles, think.

OK I’m in a hospital, I’m weak, can barely move and I’m having difficulty seeing properly. You’re also lying on the floor Miles. Get up. GET UP!

Want to learn what happens next? What becomes of Miles? Read the full entry (along with everyone else’s) in the comments for the creative fiction contest page.

Great story intro! Good luck with the contest :)

Creative writing can be much more challenging than copywriting or business writing, and when you write professionally, it can be easy to drift away from your personal creative projects in favor of the ones that pay the bills. It takes a lot of drive to stick with it!

Thanks so much for mentioning Writing Forward.

Thanks Melissa. Writing that small piece made me long for my old roleplaying days. I’d forgotten how much fun it can be.

From now on it’s the award-winning Writing Forward :)

The weird thing is, I read it after part two of Serial and Milk. That must have made you smile, reading the amnesia aspect today ;)
