An Epiphany and a Resolution

A notebook with a few pens and a bottle of ink

It’s been coming for a while and whilst it hasn’t exactly been stealthy in its approach – seeing that I’ve been aware of it for a few months now – but when I read a guest post by Sean Platt on Copyblogger it finally dawned on me; I am a writer.

Now I should point out that this wasn’t one of those, angel proclaiming, light shining from heaven “Ahhh!” moments. No this was more of a ’smack in the face with something heavy’ moment. I think this is mostly down to the opening sentences of the article:

I’m a writer. I spent over three decades unaware of this essential truth, but I’m ready to atone for my ignorance.

If I didn’t know better I’d swear that I wrote those words! So what am I getting at? Well…

I want to be Writer Dad.

An Explanation.

OK, not the actual Writer Dad but someone like him. Someone who can write for a living but gets to stay at home with his kids. (Note to mother: no I haven’t got any kids yet) But where to begin? Reading a little bit further into the article gives me my first clue:

…it never mattered that I’d been reading at least a book a week…

Makes perfect sense; no matter what your field if you want to improve, study what others have done before you. Of course the flip side of the coin is to practice your art. It pains me to admit though that I have been very lapse in my reading. As a child I used to read profusely, I have many a fond memory of the “Secret Seven” and “Famous Five”. In fact it continued into my teens with the likes of the “Hardy Boys” and the “Star Wars Expanded Universe”. Sure I’ve read some books since then, not the least of which being “Lord of the Rings” – but what happened to me? (My inner geek – which is eerily sounding like my mother right now- is yelling “Computer games!”)

The Resolution.

So my New Years resolution is to read more and to do more writing. I wonder if it’s too late to ask Santa for a book this Christmas?

That’s the nicest thing I’ve read all day. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
